How to Care for Beaded and Embellished Dresses
Your special-occasion dress deserves to last. Simple rules for storing, cleaning and travelling with beads, sequins and delicate fabrics.

A beaded or embellished dress is an investment. With the right care it will look just as beautiful at the next wedding, gala or party as it did the first time. Here is how to look after it.
After wearing
Let the dress air out for a few hours before putting it away, especially after a long evening. Check for loose beads or threads straight away; a small repair now prevents a big one later. Keep any spare beads or sequins that came with the dress in a labelled envelope.
Cleaning
- Always check the care label first.
- For small marks, dab gently with cold water. Never rub, as it loosens the embellishment.
- Heavily beaded dresses should go to a professional cleaner who handles evening wear.
- Never tumble-dry, and avoid direct ironing. Use a steamer from the inside of the dress.
Storing
Heavy embellished gowns should be stored folded flat in acid-free tissue paper, not hung, because the weight stretches the shoulders over time. Lighter dresses can hang on a padded hanger with the inner hanging loops used. Use a breathable cotton garment bag rather than plastic, which traps moisture.
Travelling
Roll the dress gently with tissue between layers, and pack it on top in your suitcase. On arrival, hang it in the bathroom while you shower; the steam releases most creases.
Wearing it well
- Put on perfume and hairspray before the dress, and let them dry.
- Watch out for bracelets and clutch chains that can snag beading.
- Sit carefully on beaded skirts, smoothing the fabric beneath you.
