The Wedding Guest Outfit Guide: Ceremony, Reception and Everything Between

How to read the dress code, which colours to avoid, and how to stay elegant from the church steps to the last dance.

The Wedding Guest Outfit Guide: Ceremony, Reception and Everything Between

Being invited to a wedding is a joy, until you open your wardrobe. Weddings mix families, generations and cultures, and the dress codes can be confusing. Here is a clear guide to dressing beautifully without stealing attention from the couple.

Read the invitation carefully

The invitation tells you more than the date. An evening reception at a hotel or castle usually means formal: a long gown or an elegant midi dress. A daytime ceremony followed by lunch leans towards smart cocktail: a knee-length or midi dress, a jumpsuit or a two-piece set. If the couple writes "black tie", choose floor length.

The colour rules

  • Avoid white, ivory and very pale champagne. Even if the bride is relaxed about it, others will notice.
  • Red is beautiful but bold. At many South Asian and some Mediterranean weddings red belongs to the bride, so check first.
  • Black is now widely accepted for evening weddings. Lift it with jewellery or a coloured clutch.
  • Jewel tones such as emerald, sapphire and deep plum are safe, flattering and photograph beautifully.
  • Soft pastels and blush suit spring and summer daytime weddings.

Think about the whole day

A wedding can last twelve hours. Plan for a ceremony that may be in a cool church or town hall, photographs outdoors, a long dinner and a dance floor. A faux-fur stole or a structured jacket keeps you warm during the ceremony, and comes off for the evening. Bring a second pair of comfortable flats in your bag; your feet will thank you at midnight.

Modest and elegant

Many guests want coverage for religious or family reasons. Long sleeves in sheer fabric, high necklines with beaded detail, and floor-length gowns can be just as glamorous as anything strapless. A matching shawl or a long-line jacket over an evening dress is a classic, graceful solution.

Accessories that finish the look

Choose one statement: either earrings, a necklace or a sparkling clutch. Metallic heels in silver or gold go with almost every colour. If the reception is on grass, block heels are your best friend.

A quick checklist

  • Dress code understood, white avoided
  • A layer for the ceremony
  • Comfortable second shoes
  • A clutch big enough for phone, lipstick and tissues
